Chronic Constipation

Constipation is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder. It is characterized by:

• less than 3 bowel movements per week
• straining to defecate
• hard, lumpy stools
• a feeling of incomplete evacuation of stool

Chronic constipation compromises the quality of life, social functioning, and the ability to perform activities of daily living. It also increases the risk of hemorrhoids.

Low magnesium status and/or low iron levels are both associated with a higher prevalence of constipation. A poor gut microbiome and overgrowth of pathogens is also linked to constipation. Gut lining inflammation can also contribute to constipation.
